Gwinnett, Georgia, Burglar to Serve 10 years in Prison
Gwinnett, Georgia, resident Paul Ali Slater was sentenced to a minimum of 10 years in prison for breaking into the home of a Loganville mother, who shot Slater five times in the stomach, liver and lungs with a handgun.
According to Channel 2 Action News, an Atlanta-area media outlet, Slater stated he broke into the home of a 37-year-old mother of two expecting it to be vacant, but upon entering an attic crawl space, found the woman waiting with a .38 caliber revolver.
“The crawl space was there. I figured there might be a safe or something there that might obtain jewelry or something,” Slater told the court. “That was the only door I opened, the only door.”
According to the source, investigators said that Slater had pursued the woman and her 9-year-old twins through the house, entering several rooms before arriving at the attic where he was shot.
Even with his wounds, Slater was able to flee the scene, but he crashed his vehicle into the fence of a neighboring home. After his arrest, he spent a month in a hospital recovering before he was transferred to a Walton jail.
Slater plead guilty to charges of burglary and was sentenced to 20 years in prison by Walton County Superior Court Judge Ken Wynne, with a minimum service of 10 years. Slater had a history of previous arrests, including for battery and violating probation.
