Protect Your Family During Tornado Season

If you’ve been following the news lately, you’re probably aware that massive tornados have touched down in the Oklahoma City area, resulting in dozens of lives lost and likely hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. Atlanta is no stranger to tornados either. The Weather Channel ranked Atlanta in the top 10 most tornado-prone areas of the country.

These storms are often deadly and disastrous, but CBS Atlanta, a local affiliate, has enumerated several steps you can take to protect your family and property in the event that a tornado touches down near your home.

The first thing you should do is select a place in the house where your loved ones will be secured. This could be a basement or any room where there are no windows or exterior walls, which can be ripped off of the house if the storm comes too close.

Once you’ve designated a safety area, you should keep an emergency kit close by that includes water, blankets, a flashlight, a first aid kit, snacks and a weather radio so you can track the progress of the tornado.

The most important thing, as CBS Atlanta points out, is to share your emergency safety plan with everyone in your house, so that if you’re not home at the time of the storm, they’ll still know what to do to protect themselves.

One of the dangers of tornados is that they’re typically accompanied by lightning storms, which can spark fires if they strike dry brush or your home. Consider investing in a residential fire alarm system maintained by an Atlanta alarm company that will alert your loved ones in the event of a catastrophe.
