Formulating an Emergency Escape Plan

One of the best ways to ensure the safety of you and your family in the event of a fire is to create an escape plan, and to make sure every member of the family understands what to do and what their responsibility is in case of a fire-related emergency.

We highly recommend that you draw a floor plan of your home and come up with two escape routes for each room through windows and doors. It’s also a good idea to designate a safe meeting place nearby, such as a neighbor’s lawn or tree, where family members can go once they have made it out of the home.

If you have infants, disabled individuals or elderly persons living with you, make sure at least one family member is assigned to assist this person if they are unable to leave the home by themselves.

Walk through your home and make sure that all doors and windows are easy to open from the inside. For any windows with security bars, make sure the bars have an emergency release on the inside that would allow you to escape through the window.

Most importantly, once you and your family members are out of the home, do not attempt to go back inside! Even if someone is missing at the designated meeting place, it is much safer to alert the fire department dispatcher than to attempt a rescue yourself.
