Home Security Tips for Summer Vacationing
As schools let out for the summer and the weather warms up, many Atlanta residents are planning their summer vacations. Georgia weather is going to start getting hot very soon, and many families are looking forward to time spent on the beach and up in the mountains camping.
Unfortunately, burglars like to use this opportunity to break into people’s homes knowing they won’t be around. Often they’ll keep an eye out for homes that remain empty for a long period of time, seeing that a car has been gone for days on end or that a mailbox hasn’t been emptied in a week. We have some advice for homeowners who want to secure their dwelling before taking off on a trip:
- Consider having IP cameras installed, which can be monitored using a mobile phone or tablet device from virtually anywhere with an internet connection.
- Don’t announce that you’ll be vacationing on social networks like Facebook and Twitter. These days you may have so many “friends” that you’ll forget who is watching, and unfortunately, some burglaries are committed by people you may know.
- Have a neighbor park their car in your driveway to make your home appear occupied.
- Let a few trusted neighbors know that you’ll be gone, so that they can keep an eye out, collect your mail and newspapers when they’re delivered and call the police in the event that a suspicious person is hovering around your property.
